French horn embouchure: An electromyographic facial kinematic study
نویسندگان
چکیده
This study investigated embouchure-related muscle activities and related facial skin movement in trained French horn players. In relation to pitch and intensity of tone produced, amplitude of surface electromyogram (EMG) from five selected facial muscles and related facial skin kinematics were examined during preand post-attack phases. There was no difference in EMGs and facial kinematics between these two phases, indicating importance of appropriate preparation for embouchure formation. EMGs in all muscles increased linearly with an increase in pitch, and they also increased with tone intensity without interacting with the pitch effect. Facial skin movement remained constant across all pitches and intensities, except for lateral retraction of the lips during high-pitch tone production. These findings indicate that contraction of the embouchurerelated muscles is fundamentally isometric for flexible sound parameters in order to modulate lip tension and firmness. Horn players seem to have developed a specialized ability to precisely balance facial muscle contraction with inter-oral pressure.

متن کاملDivergent oral cavity motor strategies between healthy elite and dystonic horn players
BACKGROUND This paper describes the use of real-time magnetic resonance imaging in visualizing and quantifying oral cavity motor strategies employed by 6 healthy, elite horn players and 5 horn players with embouchure dystonia. METHODS Serial images with an acquisition time of 33.3 ms were obtained from each performer during execution of an 11-note harmonic series encompassing 2.5 octaves on a...
متن کاملInefficiencies in Motor Strategies of Horn Players with Embouchure Dystonia: Comparisons to Elite Performers.
OBJECTIVE Motor control of the muscles of the face, lips, and tongue of horn players has traditionally been described from externally observed phenomena. Developments in real-time, high-speed magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) extend the scope of study to include descriptive and quantitative information from within the mouth. We employed these developments to compare oral movement strategies betw...
متن کاملSensorimotor overactivity as a pathophysiologic trait of embouchure dystonia.
BACKGROUND Embouchure dystonia is a focal task-specific dystonia affecting the complex interplay of lower facial, jaw, and tongue muscles in musicians playing brass or woodwind instruments. Although it is highly disabling for affected patients, little is known about the pathophysiologic basis of this rare movement disorder. METHODS We therefore studied sensorimotor activation patterns during ...
متن کاملKinematic and electromyographic analyses of a karate punch.
The aims of this study were: (i) to present the kinematic and electromyographic patterns of the choku-zuki punch performed by 18 experienced karatekas from the Portuguese team, and (ii) to compare it with the execution of 19 participants without any karate experience. The kinematic and electromyographic data were collected from the arm and forearm during the execution of the specific punch. A t...
